Subhash Chandra Bose's wife was named Emilie Schenkl. She was an Austrian lady who met Bose in 1934 while she was studying at the University of Vienna. Bose had gone to Europe to gather support for India's independence struggle.
Emilie and Bose fell in love and got married in 1937 in a secret ceremony in Bad Gastein, Austria. After the marriage, Emilie changed her name to "Bhāratī Devī" and became actively involved in Bose's activities.
During World War II, Bose went to Japan and formed the Indian National Army (INA) to fight against the British. Emilie stayed in Europe and raised funds for the INA's activities. She also communicated with Bose through letters and supported him emotionally during the difficult times
